The handle uses 2 standard and readily available "C" sized alkaline batteries to supply power to an ultra-bright high intensity halogen bulb for a very bright light, C cell re-chargeable's also work well with our otoscope. The heart of any otoscope is in it's lens. Like all the finer quality otoscopes ours uses an optical quality GLASS lens that is specially-coated to help resist scratches. The lens is also hinged and swings aside for cleaning and easy access.

IMPORTANT: The otoscope head attaches to the handle with an advanced design Luer-Lock mount instead of a small screw to hold the head in place. This is the way all higher quality otoscopes lock the head in place. Our otoscope even has a stainless steel insufflator outlet to facilitate use of an Insufflator bulb if you choose.  The clarity and definition this otoscope will deliver on visualizing the tympanic membrane is superb. It is well made and gives a very clear picture of the eardrum. It works every bit as well as the old Welch Allan my brother gave me. The disposable specula thing is also nice since it allows me to use the same type of specula my doctor uses in his office and can be thrown away when done. Great customer service as well when it came to answering any questions I had after my purchase.
